Looking forward to playing it with the only friend I have that’s really into DW next week. So not a disaster at all, but also not the epic adventure game I think everyone was expecting. It feels limited and small, and there are references throughout to stuff from the 5th and 10th Doctor, which were apparently taken out to reduce MSRP. You can really tell that material was cut for the expansions though. And some things have a bonus when they are with the correct Doctors. Recent Doctor Who stuff acts like 10-12 are all there is, but in this you can send William Hartnell and Amy Pond up against Sutekh on the Orient Express. The Dilemmas, locations, equipment, companions, and everything range from all eras of the show, which is awesome. And there are Fixed Points where you can’t do rerolls, and Time Locks where face changes are not allowed. At certain points the Dalek ship hits Time Anomalies, which are kind of like Dilemmas but they have an overall game effect, like locking up dice. Fail and bad stuff happens, including putting out Daleks that limit your dice. Then there are rerolls or face changes that you can get from cards or paying Sonic Charges. So if you need Running (ha ha), you might want to swap a black dice for a green one. These have higher probabilities if getting certain results. The Doctor’s dice are all black, but companions can help you by allowing you to focus dice into more specialized green, red, or blue ones. You do this by building a pool based on your Doctor and any companion cards you have. You are basically racing a Dalek ship to Gallifrey, bouncing around locations throughout time and space and resolving Dilemmas. It’s also sort of in this weird middle ground between being a very accessible family style Co-op and something more hobby oriented. It’s hard not to be disappointed in it based on GF9’s track record and it being the best hope for a great DW game, but it is really a pretty decent Elder Sign-style dice game with some fun components (the minis are actually really nice) and some DEEP fan service. I played Doctor Who: Time of the Daleks last night.
